Bodegas Josep Masachs

It rains thirty days a year there, so mould gets little chance. Alex Ruiz Masachs makes the cava.

The old family estate of Josep Masachs was founded in 1820 and lies in the Penedès region of Catalonia. The vineyards are in ‘Central and Alt Penedes’, where a Mediterranean climate brings dry summers and mild winters. It rains on only 30 days a year, so damp and mould barely get a hold on the grapes. A perfect situation for growing grapes sustainably, that is, without heavy pesticides or other harmful substances.

From these fine grapes the Masachs family makes beautiful Cava. In doing so they use the very latest vinification technology. The result is a Cava Brut Nature Eco of unique quality. The soil in which the vines are planted consists of limestone beneath a layer of sand and loam. The passionate current owner and co-winemaker is Alex Ruíz Masachs.

Sustainability runs in their veins. A few examples of how they protect the planet:

  • Avoiding synthetic crop protection products
  • Using natural compost to preserve the biodiversity of the soil, so that the soil, the vine and the grapes stay healthy for the long term
  • Minimal water use, by using water several times over and at high pressure when cleaning the bottles, which keeps water consumption to a minimum
  • Energy is generated from solar panels wherever possible
  • All dry goods such as screw caps, bottles and labels are 100% recycled
  • Every element that contributes to a healthier planet, including countering global warming, is continually evaluated and improved where possible
